How to Compare Protein Powder by Cost Per Gram of Protein
Protein powder prices are hard to compare because scoop size and container weight can mislead. A bigger tub or bigger scoop does not automatically mean a lower cost per gram of protein.
Use the cost per gram protein calculator to enter the price, servings per container, and protein per serving for each option.
The Simple Formula
Cost per gram of protein = price after deal / total grams of protein
Total grams of protein = servings per container x protein per serving
That keeps the comparison focused on the math from the label, not on package size alone.
Generic Example
This example uses hypothetical products only, so it does not rely on current prices or product claims.
| Product | Price | Servings | Protein per serving | Total protein | Cost per gram of protein | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Product A | $40 | 20 | 25 g | 500 g | $0.0800 | Higher per protein gram |
| Product B | $45 | 30 | 20 g | 600 g | $0.0750 | Better value |
Product A has more protein per serving, but Product B has more total protein for the price in this example.
Why Scoop Size Can Mislead
Scoop size is not the same as protein grams. Compare the actual protein per serving, then multiply by servings per container before dividing by price.
Common Traps
- Scoop size: a larger scoop can make the label look stronger without lowering cost per protein gram.
- Servings per container: more servings only helps if the protein per serving also supports the value.
- Protein per serving: multiply it by the serving count before comparing.
- Sale tags: use the final shelf price after any discount.
- Bulk tubs: compare total protein grams, not container size alone.
