How to Compare Protein Powder Prices
Protein powder can be surprisingly hard to compare.
Two tubs might look similar on the shelf, but one scoop may contain more powder, less protein, or fewer servings than the other. A cheaper tub is not always cheaper once you compare how much actual protein you are getting.
The fairest unit price
For protein powder, the most useful number is often price per gram of protein. Price per serving can be helpful, but serving sizes vary. Price per gram of powder can also be misleading because not every gram in the tub is protein.
Use this formula:
Cost per gram of protein = final checkout cost / total grams of protein in the tub
A simple comparison
Here is a made-up example. Product A looks cheaper per serving, but Product B gives more protein for the money.
| Product | Final cost | Servings | Protein per serving | Total protein | Cost per gram protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Powder A | $42 | 30 | 22 g | 660 g | $0.064 |
| Powder B | $48 | 28 | 27 g | 756 g | $0.063 |
Common protein powder price traps
Serving size is not always equal
One brand's serving might be 30 g of powder while another uses 36 g. If you only compare cost per serving, you may miss the difference.
Flavor protein gap
Different flavors from the same brand can have different protein amounts. Chocolate, cookie, or dessert-style flavors may use more flavoring ingredients than vanilla or unflavored versions. Compare the exact label for the flavor you plan to buy.
Scoop weight can vary
The scoop is convenient, but it is not a perfect scale. Powder density, settling, and how full your scoop is can change how much you actually use. For price comparison, rely on the label's servings and grams rather than your own scoop habit.
Shipping changes the real price
Protein powder is heavy, so shipping can change the deal quickly. Use the final checkout cost, including shipping, discounts, taxes, and any subscription savings you actually plan to use.
Bundles are not always cheaper
A tub bundled with a shaker or samples can look like a better deal. If you do not need the extras, compare the protein powder value using the full bundle price anyway.
A quick checklist before buying
- Use the final checkout cost, not just the shelf price.
- Compare the exact flavor and size you are buying.
- Multiply servings by protein per serving to estimate total protein.
- Divide final cost by total grams of protein.
- Use price as one factor, not the only factor.
Use the calculator
If you want to compare the tub size first, use the weight calculator to compare price per gram of powder. For the most protein-specific comparison, use the formula above with total grams of protein.
