How to use this shrinkflation calculator
- Enter the old package price, size, and unit.
- Enter the new package price, size, and matching unit type.
- Compare the old and new unit prices to see the hidden price change.
Shrinkflation formulas
unit price = price / package size
unit price increase = (new unit price - old unit price) / old unit price
The calculator also estimates what the new unit price would cost at the old package size.
Evergreen example
Product A used to cost $2.00 for 16 ounces. Product B is the new version at $2.00 for 12 ounces. The shelf price is unchanged, but the unit price rises from $0.1250 per ounce to about $0.1667 per ounce.
What can mislead you
- Same price, smaller size: the shelf price can stay flat while unit price rises.
- Higher price, same size: a direct price increase still shows up in unit price.
- Unit changes: compare weight with weight, volume with volume, and count with count.
- Count changes: fewer sheets, loads, servings, or units can raise the real price.
- Multipacks and sale labels: enter the final price and total package amount you want to compare.
