Bulk Value Calculator

Is the bulk pack actually cheaper? Compare a regular pack and a bulk pack by unit price, then adjust for the amount you expect to use.

Regular pack

Bulk pack

Adjust for waste or unused amount

Leave blank if you expect to use the whole bulk pack.

How to use this bulk value calculator

  1. Enter the regular pack price, size, and unit.
  2. Enter the bulk pack price, size, and matching unit type.
  3. Optionally enter expected waste if you may not use the whole bulk pack.

Bulk value formulas

unit price = price / package size

usable bulk unit price = bulk price / usable bulk size

break-even usable percentage = raw bulk unit price / regular unit price

Evergreen example

Product A regular pack costs $4 for 8 ounces. Product B bulk pack costs $9 for 24 ounces. Product A is $0.5000 per ounce, while Product B is $0.3750 per ounce before waste. If you expect 20% of the bulk pack to go unused, the usable bulk price is about $0.4688 per ounce.

What can mislead you

  • Bigger package: a larger package is not automatically cheaper by unit price.
  • Sale tags: a regular pack on sale can beat a bulk pack.
  • Storage waste: unused product can erase the bulk savings.
  • Unit changes: compare weight with weight, volume with volume, and count with count.
  • Multipacks: use total quantity, not package count alone.
