How to use this cost per load calculator

  1. Enter the detergent price or choose a deal type.
  2. Enter the number of comparable loads on the package.
  3. Add another detergent to compare the cost per load and find the better value.

Cost per load formula

price after deal / number of loads = cost per load

Use the load count that matches the same washing assumption for every product. If one package says regular loads and another says up to X loads, standardize the assumption before comparing.

Evergreen example

Product A costs $12 for 60 loads. Product B costs $16 for 100 loads. Product A is $0.20 per load, while Product B is $0.16 per load, so Product B is the better value before any other preferences.

What can mislead you

  • Up to X loads: this can use a smaller dose assumption than your normal laundry.
  • Cap size: liquid detergent caps may mark several different fill lines.
  • Pods vs liquid: pod count is easy to read, but the cost per load can still be higher.
  • Concentrated detergent: a smaller bottle can still deliver more loads if the dose is lower.
  • Bulk bottles: bigger bottles are not automatically cheaper per load.
